Su construcción con cantera comenzó en 1725, año en que se colocó la primera piedra. Sus bellas torres de 40 metros de altura realizadas en estilo toscano destacan sobre su portada principal. En su interior, en un nicho con forma de cruz, se resguarda la imagen venerada del Cristo de Mapimí, que estuvo en el primer templo que hubo en la ciudad. En la vieja sacristía de la capilla del Rosario, a un costado de la catedral, se encuentra el Museo de Arte Sacro, hermoso salón que resguarda una rica muestra de pintura colonial y objetos de uso religioso procedentes de varios templos de la ciudad.
